EU and US Forge Rare Earth Minerals Partnership to Counter Chinese Dominance
The European Union and the TRUMP administration are finalizing a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint rare earth and critical minerals partnership. The agreement aims to create a "Strategic Partnership Roadmap" within three months, focusing on direct supply routes between the US and Europe while eliminating third-party dependencies.
The draft outlines collaborative mining projects, price stabilization mechanisms, and measures to prevent market flooding by external actors. Both regions seek to secure supplies for defense, technology, and green energy sectors—where these minerals are indispensable for weapons, satellites, smartphones, and batteries.
China's export restrictions on rare earths last year accelerated the urgency. Although a temporary deal with Beijing delayed the ban in October, the WHITE House is now mobilizing allies through high-level meetings with foreign ministers and trade officials. The initiative includes stockpiling strategies and safeguards against predatory pricing.
